Aye am I hearing the original sample from Najubes 10 years later 😂
Amazing
Almost finished scoring a big band arrangement of the Parker tune.
Loving the Samba feel in the early set. So deep, so deep.
Roland was a true master, his shoes will never be filled. It's a crime that his tenor was sold off after having all the modifications removed. Story: I was in a used record shop in Miami back in the mid-80's, and found a bin with a bunch of Roland's work. Turned out the owner had a show on the public FM station, covering jazz of all kinds but dedicated to Kirk. He said that he'd met Roland at a local club - had been there every night, was invited backstage and they became friends. I was less sceptical after he pulled out a crapload of old pictures of himself with Roland and Dorthaan. Anyway, he said that one day they were headed up to Ft. Lauderdale and stopped at the big seashell stand that used to be on Biscayne Blvd. There were some conch shell horns for sale, and when Roland heard someone blowing one he asked to hold it. He puts it to his mouth and starts to blow... and blow... and blow... for about 10 minutes straight, discovering what he could do with it. People stopped shopping, were sticking their heads out the windows of the neighboring businesses, this whole crowd gathers around and when Roland finally stopped and asked how much the thing cost the guy said "You can play it like that, man, it's YOURS!" It was a good story. He also claimed to still have one of the joints with Roland's ashes in it from the funeral. He showed it to me... whatever... Fast forward to 1996, I find the new release of "The One Man Twins" in the video store and bring it home. Watching it I'm freakin' amazed, it was the first time I'd seen footage of his performances and it was mind-bending. So it gets to the end of "Volunteered Slavery" and.. what the... hey, it's the conch shell! I guess the guy might not have been full of it after all. I sure wish that I'd seen him live.
Harpers solo is diving deep !
Never seen Steve McCall before 😍- THANK YOU 🤩
❤
What a beautiful album. I love Arjen Gorter tremendous bassist. RIP Arjen..
Art Ensemble...excellent, always.
a reverse version of Ida Lupino ?

@@Eifila indeed
Great ensemble, and my fist time hearing bassist Dave Williams, what a great player. The performance, arrangement, and solos on 'Ugly Beauty' are especially beautiful IMHO. Thanks for sharing
seeing bill evans movie wonderfulllllllllll
I saw him at the old Bull's venue in Chicago this same year. Fortunately, I got there for the first set - because he played non-stop straight thru the entire night rather than the three sets planned. I snuck a tape recorder in an recorded 90 minutes of it, but an older sibling's friend borrowed it and never returned it, then later claimed he never recalled having done so.
I was 14 in 74 I knew my Band directors hero Chick played often with this ensemble and Holland had played with Miles and Chick. This tonal rhythmic freedom seemed so important I had to take it seriously at 14. The year I had been exposed to Bernstein on about Schoenberg and Berg and Stravinsky's poly tonality it was challenging in a way that's totally ignored by the players today it seems. It's not 1953. No schools outside of Europe address this important phase.
Alston Anderson brought me here. Thanks for posting.
Love love Art Pepper, Patricia and Walking out Blues are the bees knees.
Always luv'd Joe's playing........What an amazing sound luv it..

Interesting version of Priestess, a favorite tune. Love this!
Art Pepper, the best Saxplayer of the World
Pete Levin doubling on Minimoog and French Horn!
This was written by Carla Bley?

All of this is divine. But especially vibin 1:06:22 to 1:06:59 - sounds like pure love
TERRIFIC !
Quite an excellent choice in sweaters here. Jokes aside, what a class act!!!
"Cheryl" remains in C Major, as per Parker Omnibook!
Usually Frank Rehak on trombone.
? Frank Rehak is on the July and October sessions of 'Individualism' but, according to several sources, not on this earlier 4tet one, which was neither supposed to be part of the album nor be released. ;-)
Giuffre has great tone.
The greatest.
Have 'subbed'!
Which percussion instrument plays the melody near the very end, please?
Sounds like that of the original recording?: ua-cam.com/video/IKIGbnK-AAM/v-deo.html
1. on what timing, please? 2. yes, this is MJQ's 1955 original recording
@@Eifila Circa @1:27:30 - sounds like a flexitone?
indeed, most probably played by Sue Evans ;-)
Here another live version but with the full introduction included. Does anyone know of the Parker tune "Concord" here as I don't recognise it? ua-cam.com/video/U7Mpr703Gic/v-deo.html
Concorde is a John Lewis tune: ua-cam.com/video/tRguRK8L4Eo/v-deo.html
Can someone please post a link to the Parker tune "Concord"?

@@Eifila Oh wow, cheers. No wonder I could not find it under 'Parker'!.
What happened to Trevor Koehler? Brilliant musician!
He disappeared a few months after this tour (suicide after harsh drug and alcohol addctions).
@@Eifila That is terrible. He looks very thin here
@@monsterjazzlicksmy Dad (Trevor Koehler) was always slim. He ate like a horse and never gained a pound. My grandpa said Trevor had a growth spurt at the age of 12 and grew very tall and slim.
@@Eifilahe was an alcoholic, not a drug addict. Yes, he used uppers and downers to accommodate his active performance schedule, but he was not a drug addict. His suicide has much more to do with matters of the heart and personal relationships. All of his sons had been removed from his world. Glade
Sorry about that, sad anyway for his relatives. He was a tremendous musician (w/The Insect Truth too before he became a major member of the GEO)
So is it basically a medley of three Parker tunes?
yep, as quoted in the description.
@@Eifila I might try and make a big band arrangement of this, which is why I asked.
still love his sounds!!

All the business had be sorted out for Gil and Jimi to start working on a albumn. However Jimi died a few days before they were to start.

There's a concert on UA-cam with Gil Evans big band playing Jimi Hendrix tunes? Hiram Bullock and Bill Evans are in the band?

Brilliant! 😁
From start to finish an absoulute masterclass and Pharoah's sound is so pure, i really enjoyed the whole thing!
My Favorite also, So explosive unbridled free from restraints.
Classic. Joe had his vocabulary in stone!
Another of Chico Freeman's beautiful, thoughtful tunes... He makes one stop and think about the good things in life. So happy to have found this.
That's my music!
